"The White House meeting, which was described by Mr McCain's campaign as "a contentious shouting match", appeared at one stage to have reached an agreement.
But the Republicans' intervention, which centred on a proposal that the Government offer to insure debts rather than use taxpayers' money to mop them up, caused the meeting to break apart in bitter political acrimony.
Leading Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, reacted so angrily to the last-minute change in demands that Henry Paulson, the Treasury Secretary, got down on one knee to beg them not to disclose how badly it had gone, witnesses said."
