Governing is hard.
Running for office should be even harder.
Governor Butch Otter's recent remarks, if reported correctly, leave me wondering if serving in an elected position right now will make re-running for it almost impossible...not just for Butch, but for every one of the Legislators.
I hope so.
I've watched the antics in the Legislature for years. A handful of the men and women who go there to serve each session actually do so with an idea of helping people. The rest seem to be re-living high school. It's weird...it really is.
In a way, Butch Otter doesn't fit into that group. He's more like The Nice Principal. And so many of the Legislators end up being like...(I'm gonna test your TV trivia).... a room full of Eddie Haskells - complementing him all the while, scheming behind his back..
Man, no wonder The Governor needs compassion...not only from the press, but also from the citizens.
We stick him with a bunch of "Sophomores" in the Senate and expect him to get things done.
The Speaker of the House has to contend with it, too. He's like The Vice Principal, spanking and cajoling.
The Senate leadership? All I can say is that the Pro-Tem needs a a pat on the back, a bull-whip and all of our support, as well. He's got a pack of jackals to "tame and train".
Maybe, we are the REAL ones who need compassion...the hard times are ours...all of ours. And maybe just maybe the yahoos who slide down the bannisters of our Capitol's sanity ought to be encouraged to leave office in 2010...since it's too hard on them.
Maybe new student-body members will allow the Principal some time to think...
Ward and June Cleaver would be applauding such a move.
