In 1972 just prior to the Presidential Election a small, seemingly unimportant story broke. The story involved a clandestine random series of acts that seemed to have no tentacles to the White House. Neither Sgt Paul Leeper nor Officer John Barrett who investigated the break-in could have imagined the consequences of what they were investigating.
Yet it was the start of the single biggest story of the 1970's - a story that brought down the President of the United States. The FBI and the CIA were huge players in the drama we call Watergate.
In 2012 on the very day of the Presidential Election a small seemingly unimportant story broke. The story involved a clandestine random series of acts that seemed to have no tentacles to the White House.
Here is the Wall Street Journal article that was just posted a few minutes ago:
By EVAN PEREZ, SIOBHAN GORMAN and DEVLIN BARRETT
A social planner's complaints about email stalking launched the monthslong criminal inquiry that led to a woman romantically linked to former Gen. David Petraeus and to his abrupt resignation Friday as Central Intelligence Agency chief."
And,
"The timing of events near the election has raised suspicions among some lawmakers that the administration was seeking to hide embarrassing news before the presidential balloting took place.
"The FBI has a lot of explaining to do, and so does the White House," said Rep. Peter King (R., N.Y.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. "I have a hard time accepting most of the story we've heard so far. It doesn't add up."
And,
"FBI and Justice Department officials reassessed their investigation over the next several days and determined there wasn't sufficient cause to bring charges. They advised the Director of National Intelligence of their findings at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Election Day"
The similarities of the two outcomes may look nothing alike at this moment; however they may begin to look more alike if the White House begins to stonewall. Just as a break-in led to a cover-up in 1972, the question in many minds this weekend is whether a simple series of emails between two adulterous lovers may lead to a cover up on the deaths at Benghazi in 2012.
My hope is that the House and the Senate Intelligence Committees are completely informed by the FBI and the CIA and that there is no thread that unravels itself in the direction of Benghazi.
If there IS such a connection between such random events, my hope is that the truth of what happened is brought forward for all Americans to see.
